August 2018 – Steve Fleming
We welcome on board Steve Fleming who joined our team a few weeks ago as Associate Director. He brings with him an impressive and well-rounded 20 year experience in accountancy working with owner managed businesses and individuals.
Working alongside Chris Trevor and our experienced managers and staff, Steve forms part of a strong experienced team ready to assist with any tax and accountancy requirements for individuals and owner managed businesses.
Steve brings with him an all-round wealth of knowledge and enjoys working closely with clients to maximise their goals and potential. He brings particular expertise with management accounts, budgeting and future projections, and knowledge relating to not for profit and charitable organisations.
July 2018 - Exam success
Well done to our apprentice Katie Atkins for achieving a Distinction in passing Level 3 of her AAT studies. Katie is now looking forward to continuing her studies and and will be completing Level 4 over the next year!
June 2018 - College Award
Our trainee accountant Kenlie Youngman recently won the “Student of the year - Best Achievement Award” from Central Bedfordshire College. Kenlie has studied at the College for 2 years now as an apprentice undertaking his AAT accountancy qualification. Congratulations Kenlie!
November 2017 - Dunstable Business & Community Awards
We enjoyed an excellent evening at the 2017 Dunstable Business & Community Awards, held at Dunstable Conference Centre.
We were delighted for our senior manager Sue Cox to be awarded the “Employee of the year” award. Four of our team were finalists for this award which demonstrates the quality and dedication of our staff.
As sponsors of the Trades Person of the Year Award, we were very pleased to present a winner’s trophy to DRJ Building Services and a highly commended certificate to Jackson & Philips garage.
September 2017 – John Wright
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing away of John Wright, one of the Directors of the firm. As many of you will know, he had been fighting brain cancer for the past year. John had been a principal at the firm for 22 years and will be dearly missed by all of the team at Stoten Gillam and by his clients.

June 2017 – Go-Karting
Some of our team visited the newly opened Go Karting track in Dunstable to enjoy a mini grand prix format karting race. We enjoyed the experience and had a fun time. It is good to see new businesses and entertainment venues opening in the local area as part of the re-generation of Dunstable.
The venue is run by TeamSport, who are the largest indoor go karting company in the UK, operating 19 indoor go karting tracks in different locations including London Docklands, Enfield and Acton. The Dunstable track is at Verey Road, on the Woodside Industrial Estate.
December 2016 - Dunstable Foodbank Support
At the recently held Dunstable Business and Community Awards the raffle proceeds and profit made from the bar sales was used to purchase donations to the Dunstable Food Bank.
It is estimated that this contribution will provide well over 1,000 meals to local families in need this Christmas. The sponsors of the evening, which included Stoten Gillam, came together to help load the food on to the Foodbank van. Chris Trevor is pictured with representatives from the other sponsors carrying some of the food packages.
November 2016 - Dunstable Business & Community Awards

July 2016 - FSB Awards
Once again, Stoten Gillam’s progressive and entrepreneurial approach has been formally recognised, this time at the FSB Bedfordshire 2016 Business Awards. At a formal dinner of award finalists at Luton Hoo, the firm were selected as Runners Up in the category of Enterprising Business of the Year.
The awards were open to all small businesses in Bedfordshire and the specific category in which our achievements gained recognition sought to identify those businesses which could demonstrate “outstanding initiative, boldness and imagination in the enterprise, as well as sound management practices.”

April 2016 – Golf Club sponsorship
Stoten Gillam are now the official sponsors of the first hole at Dunstable Downs Golf Club.
The Club have initiated a sponsorship programme under which they are obtaining sponsors for each hole on the course.
Beside each tee, signage is erected, providing useful information about the hole to be played and including an acknowledgement of each sponsor’s support.
The first tee is in an elevated position on Dunstable Downs with good views over Dunstable and Luton and the countryside beyond. Chris Trevor and John Wright are pictured beside the firm’s sign on the first tee.
December 2015 - Support for Dunstable Foodbank
The recently held Dunstable Business and Community Awards proved to be a great success, not least as a fundraising event. Part of the net proceeds from the evening were used to buy food, which was then donated to Dunstable Foodbank.

We were delighted to also gain an award ourselves, receiving the Highly Commended award in the category of Business of the Year. Five representatives of the firm went up to collect the certificate and medal.

October 2015 - Exam success
We have celebrated the success of one of our staff members, Matthew Smith, who recently qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant. Matt joined us from the sixth form of a school in Leighton Buzzard and undertook his training with us.
He quickly adapted to the double challenge of a hard day’s work in the office and studying for exams out of hours, and was able to pass swiftly through the exam levels.
Matt is now looking to undertake additional studying in order to gain a degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University, for which he will have to undertake a final project.

August 2015 - Official opening
We recently celebrated the official opening of our brand new reception area and meeting rooms by holding an office open day, which included a buffet lunch. We were very pleased that our local MP, Mr Andrew Selous, and the Dunstable Town Mayor, Cllr Liz Jones, could join us. They both fully participated in the proceedings, which included the cutting of a ceremonial ribbon by Mr Selous.
Other guests included clients and contacts of the firm. We were also delighted to receive an unexpected visit by the former British, Commonwealth, European and World lightweight boxing Champion, Billy Schwer, who still lives in the local area.
The reaction of our guests to the changes we have brought about was very favourable and we look forward to meeting and greeting existing and new clients in our improved surroundings.
May 2015 - Refurbishment
For the last few months there has been a major renovation of our ground floor reception and meeting areas taking place. We apologise to all those visitors who have been inconvenienced whilst the building work has progressed. The project is now nearing completion and this picture provides a sneak preview of the changes which have taken place. We look forward to shortly welcoming people back into our reception and are confident that clients and staff alike will appreciate the significantly improved environment and facilities that the renovation work will provide.
March 2015 - Tax planning
The end of the tax year is fast approaching. If you want to explore ways in which we can help you to save tax, you should arrange to make contact with us in advance of 5th April in order to maximise the tax saving opportunities, as it will normally be too late after this date has passed.
For example, to take advantage of pension planning, the contribution into the scheme must normally be made within the tax year. Or, if you are in business, to obtain tax relief for expenditure incurred on plant and machinery, there are conditions that must be met before the year end which determine whether expenditure has been "incurred" for these purposes.
Therefore, take action now and contact us whist there is still time!
October 2014 – Kashflow Certification
We have now added Kashflow to the range of software that we offer and support, with 3 of our staff recently passing their exams to become Kashflow Certified. Kashflow is a cloud accounting system which allows clients to access their books from anywhere that they have an internet connection. Prices range from just £5 to £15 per month plus VAT.
We specialise in three main systems for our small business clients – Sage, Freeagent / Openbooks, and Kashflow. We can advise which is the most suitable depending on individual circumstances and can offer full implementation, support and training for each of these systems.

For the fourth successive year we were selected as finalists in the 'Training and Development' category of the FSB Bedfordshire Business Awards. Chris Trevor, Tracy Collins and Karen Snushall represented the firm at the awards ceremony, held at the Conservatory at Luton Hoo, and were presented with a certificate after a formal dinner to mark the occasion. June 2014 - Watling Football Club
Stoten Gillam are pleased to have been kit sponsors of the Under-13 team of Watling Football Club in Dunstable for the 2013/14 season. The team play in the Beds Youth Saturday League. They have played well throughout the season and ended up being runners-up in their league. In addition, they were winners of the Champions Cup final. Our congratulations to them and we hope that they go on to achieve further success next season.
May 2014 - Opening of the Incuba
The firm was in attendance at the recent formal opening of the Incuba.
The Incuba is the new learning and innovation centre in Dunstable, offering development opportunities and office accommodation for local small businesses. It is also the home to Dunstable Profitclub, of which Stoten Gillam is a sponsor.
The building was officially opened by The Right Honourable Dr Vince Cable MP, the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills and President of the Board of Trade. He later mingled with participants and talked to some of the exhibitors, which included clients of the firm.
April 2014 - Networking Games Evening
Stoten Gillam entered a team “The Bean Counters” in the recent networking pub games evening organised by Networking@Dunstable in partnership with the Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce, and held at The Incuba in Dunstable.
A number of participating teams had to take part in each of the ten traditional games available, including darts, quoits, skittles and snooker. The evening also provided an opportunity for networking with the other teams, largely drawn from organisations within the Dunstable business community.
March 2014 - Birthday Celebration
Director Chris Trevor celebrated his 40th birthday in March.
The milestone was marked by a staff meal at a Dunstable restaurant and he was presented with a gift of a driving experience day.
Chris trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with the firm, before gaining tax experience with a big 4 firm, where he also obtained the qualification of Chartered Tax Adviser. He returned to the firm in 2002 and became a director in 2006. .
He is now looking forward to celebrating his 50th birthday and all of the business challenges which he will no doubt encounter in the meantime!
February 2014 – Gold accreditation
Following an inspection review undertaken by a representative of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, we are pleased that have kept our status as an ACCA Approved Employer. We are particularly delighted that we have also retained our “Gold” standard accreditation.
This formally recognises the quality of our ongoing staff training and development, the review having covered the spectrum of trainee development, practising certificate development and continuing Professional Development. As an Approved Employer, we are committed to continuing to meet certain standards which, with Gold accreditation, are more exacting than for other levels of recognition.
November 2013 – Dunstable Business Awards
The firm enjoyed a triumphant evening at the recent 2013 Dunstable Business & Community Awards ceremony held at the Dunstable Conference Centre.
As well as our being classed Highly Commended in the category of Business of the Year, our employee Karen Snushall won the title of Employee of the Year. Karen (pictured at the event with directors John Wright and Chris Trevor) is well known to many of our clients and contacts and played an important role in the organisation of the firm's recent 50th anniversary celebration. Her award recognised her contribution not only to that event, but also the high level of commitment to her work and her contribution in furthering the interests of the firm generally.
October 2013 – The Incuba Project
Stoten Gillam were in attendance at the recent Incuba opening event. The Incuba is a brand new learning and business innovation centre in Dunstable, providing office and meeting facilities to start-up businesses in the region. It has been developed by Central Bedfordshire College in partnership with Central Bedfordshire Council.
We supported the opening event with an exhibition stand to promote the firm and, in particular, the Profitclub initiative which we sponsor. Further information on the Incuba project can be found here theincuba.com.
September 2013 – 50th Anniversary
We marked Stoten Gillam's 50th Anniversary with a celebration at the Old Palace Lodge hotel in Dunstable. Clients and contacts of the firm came together on the evening of 26 September and enjoyed wine and canapȁs. A number of guests present had either been clients of the firm since the 1960's, or represented businesses which had been with the firm since that time, and they were each presented with an engraved crystal tumbler.
The Mayor of Dunstable, John Chatterley, himself a former accountant, spoke at the event and congratulated the firm on its achievement. Other speeches came from representatives of the firm and the organisation, Don't Let Dunstable Die. In excess of 100 guests were present and some had travelled a reasonable distance in order to join in the celebration.

August 2013 - Freeagent accreditation
We are pleased to have obtained the 'Freeagent friendly' accreditation, and are currently the only firm in Bedfordshire to have done so. To obtain this we had to pass an exam to show that we have in depth knowledge of the Freeagent system so that we can fully support our clients using this system.
Freeagent, also sold as Iris Openbooks, is an award winning cloud accounting software solution, designed to make the process of accounting simpler. By making the numbers accessible and easy to understand, it represents a new transparency in the relationship between clients and accountants, and one in which both parties benefit. We can supply the software, training, support, and then prepare the final accounts and tax computations from the information in the system.
August 2013 - New signs
We have recently installed new signage on our building to improve our visibility at street level. The signs are illuminated and incorporate our current brand image. We hope that they will make us easier to find and attract new business as we will be more identifiable to people passing by.
We were pleased to be able to use local businesses with this project, with the design and planning being undertaken by Ben from Crabtree Business Development and the installation work carried out by A.C.T. shopfitting and sign manufacturers. The planning permission approval in particular was a challenge due to our building being in a conservation area.

July 2013 – Supporting Incredible Edible
Stoten Gillam are pleased to have supported a local project to transform an overgrown area in Dunstable into a community fruit and vegetable growing plot.
The Dunstable Mayor recently cut the ribbon to formally mark the opening of the ‘Incredible Edibles’ project initiated by a contact of the firm, Sahira Ward. Sahira and her team of helpers worked hard over a number of months to create the area for the benefit of the local community.

April 2013 - GrowthAccelerator
We are able to introduce our clients to the GrowthAccelerator programme, which has been developed to deliver tailor-made support packages, delivered by expert local business coaches, to businesses determined to realise controlled and accelerated growth.
Help is now at hand from the Government to invest in the growth of your business, as the cost of participation in the programme is heavily subsidised. We are able to assist businesses to access this funding and to make introductions to an appropriate local business coach. We shall be pleased to provide further information to any business interested in finding out more about this programme.
November 2012 - Dunstable Awards
Stoten Gillam were sponsors of the recent Dunstable Business and Community Awards 2012. The award ceremony was held at the Grove Theatre in Dunstable, with categories suitable for both local businesses and social communities, these awards provided an opportunity to celebrate the successes of the past year.

October 2012 - Business growth workshop
We hosted a business growth workshop at the Holiday Inn Express in Dunstable, presented by ActionCoach and in conjunction with HSBC Bank and the Chamber of Commerce.

Other topics included John Wright explaining how a Limited Company can save your business tax. Emerson Patton from ActionCoach presented 6 steps to improving business performance.
August 2012 - Business Timebank Scheme
We are pleased to be associated with another initiative to support and promote the establishment of new businesses, the Business TimeBank scheme, which has recently been established by Central Bedfordshire Council. The Business TimeBank provides a 1-2 hour free consultation with a local expert and covers a broad range of matters of interest to SMEs and start-ups, including financial, marketing and legal issues.

July 2012 – FSB Small Business Awards
Directors Chris Trevor and John Wright recently attended the prestigious 2012 FSB Bedfordshire Business Awards held at the Mansion House in Old Warden Park. The firm had once again been selected as finalists within the category of Training and Development. A large number of representatives from companies and other organisations throughout Bedfordshire attended the gala evening in order to recognise and support business excellence in the county. We are pleased to be recognised for our commitment to training.
June 2012 - Business Growth Workshop
Stoten Gillam recently hosted a business growth workshop at The Old Palace Lodge Hotel in conjunction with HSBC Bank and Knowles Benning Solicitors. The workshop was attended by around 20 businesses from Dunstable, Luton and the surrounding area.
The workshop was presented by Emerson Patton from the business coaching organisation ActionCoach, and provided delegates with an overview of the ActionCoach 6 Steps to Improving Business Performance. Updates were also given on tax and employment issues.
May 2012 - It's a knockout
Stoten Gillam director Chris Trevor was pleased to be part of Networking@Dunstable's team in a 'It's a knockout' contest. The competition was held in Priory Gardens, Dunstable on 19 May as part of an Olympics Fun Day and involved six teams from local businesses, pubs and community groups.
A great day was had by all, and the team also raised money for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Luton & Dunstable hospital.
April 2012 - Firm joins Business Advice Service (BAS)
We are an appointed firm under the BAS which is being widely promoted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW). Under the scheme, SMEs and start-ups are encouraged to consult an ICAEW Chartered Accountant over the issues facing their business.
The service aims to help fill the 'advice gap' left by the government's decision to close Business Link. It demonstrates the commitment of ICAEW Chartered Accountants to promoting economic growth by offering an initial consultation at no charge to SMEs and start-ups on a full range of business issues.

September 2011 - Exam success
We are delighted that one of our employees, Zoya Sharif, has qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant, having passed the final stage of the recent exam sitting of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.
She can now go on to describe herself as a Chartered Certified Accountant.
Alongside her professional studies, she has also been working towards a degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University, for which she now has to undertake a final project.
Zoya lives in Luton and has trained at our Dunstable Office. Zoya has gained lots of experience with the firm and prepares accounts for our sole trader, partnership and company clients.
Spring 2011 - Firm joins Networking@Dunstable
Stoten Gillam are pleased to be members of Dunstable's new networking club called 'Networking @ Dunstable'.
Each month the group meets to discuss real business issues and share knowledge points - a recent example, local expert Lynnette Moodey from Moodey IT gave a presentation on search-engine optimisation - a topic relevant to every business nowadays.

July 2010 - Firm joins the Chamber of Commerce
Stoten Gillam Limited became a registered member of Bedfordshire and Luton Chamber of Commerce.
The local Chamber forms part of the UK's largest business organisation, representing over 135,000 companies across Great Britain - ranging from one man bands and start ups to multinationals.
The local Chamber has a heritage stretching back to 1877, when it was first formed by local hat factory owners keen to build and retain skills in the local community, attract inward investment to the area and support local businesses.
One of the early businesses attracted to Luton was Vauxhall and the Chamber is now based in the old Vauxhall headquarters.
Director Chris Trevor said 'We hope to play a full and active role within the Chamber and are pleased to have joined this prestigious organisation'.
May 2010 - Firm achieves Awards recognition
We were delighted to have been selected as finalists in the prestigious FSB 2010 Bedfordshire Small Business Awards.
The awards are supported by the Federation of Small Businesses and the firm was chosen in recognition of the quality of its staff training and development. The judges were looking for businesses that are able to offer clear opportunities for staff development and, in particular, which provide flexibility for training to take place within a working environment.
Other categories of award included environmental responsibility, business innovation and e-business.
The grand final was a black tie event held at Luton Hoo.
The Federation of Small Business (FSB) is the UK's largest organisation promoting and protecting the interests of the self employed and owners of small firms.
Director, John Wright, said 'We are very pleased and proud to have been selected as finalists in the FSB Awards'. Fellow director, Chris Trevor, added 'As a firm, we take training and development very seriously and this has been reflected in our recent staff successes'.
Spring 2010 - Exam double success
We were able to celebrate the success of two of our employees, who pass the final papers of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
Lindsey Roe and Charlotte Lawler, both achieved success in the sittings of their final exams and can now describe themselves as Chartered Certified Accountants.
Alongside their professional studies, Lindsey and Charlotte also gained degrees in Applied Accountancy from Oxford Brookes University.
Both ladies live in Dunstable and trained at our Dunstable office.
Director, John Wright, said 'We are extremely proud of Lindsey and Charlotte. These professional exams are very tough and it is very pleasing that all their hard work has paid off'. Fellow Director, Chris Trevor, explained that most of their studying has been undertaken after a full working day at the office, which requires a great deal of dedication on their part.
March 2010 - Stoten Gillam supports The Hatters
The firm was proud to sponsor a football match involving our local football club, Luton Town FC.
They played Hayes & Yeading FC at Kenilworth Road and the final result was an incredible 8-0 to Luton.
We took along a number of guests, who enjoyed a buffet lunch and a tour around the ground. Needless to say, there were no complaints regarding the quality of the play and the final outcome.
At the end of the match, the firm was presented with a signed Luton Town shirt by man of the match, Keith Keane.
